正如这部专辑的名称“牧歌”（Pastorale），意大利牧歌（madrigal）对于16世纪的欧洲可以说得上是最有影响的世俗音乐形式。无论是宗教音乐还是世俗音乐的作曲家几乎都要涉猎这一体裁。专辑中的牧歌是16世纪的意大利牧歌，它的歌词多是感伤或爱情内容的田园诗，室内复调音乐的风格。竖笛演奏家朵洛西·欧柏林格（Dorothee Oberlinger）以及一众音乐家通过演奏这一体裁的音乐，将这些巴洛克风格的曲目充分还原，仿佛让人置身于欧洲的牧场。随着竖笛清脆的音色，无不让人心旷神怡。
